A week and a half after the mass shooting at Morgan State University, authorities have taken a 17-year-old suspect into custody. However, they’re still on the hunt for an 18-year-old named Jovan Williams, who officers believe was also involved.
Authorities Have Issued An Arrest Warrant For Jovan Williams: “We Will Not Rest”
According to a press release from the Baltimore Police Department (BPD), the unnamed minor was apprehended in Washington, D.C., on Thursday (Oct. 12).
The teen was identified with the help of surveillance footage, and he’s been charged with attempted murder. Authorities also identified Jovan Williams as a person of interest, though they haven’t yet apprehended him.
Per the BPD’s statement, Williams is “considered armed and dangerous,” and commissioner Richard Worley noted that authorities “will not rest until Williams is in custody.”
“BPD has been working tirelessly on the investigation into this incident and are grateful for the many partners that assisted us in identifying and capturing one of our suspects. We will not rest until Williams is in custody.”
In response to the juvenile’s arrest, Dr. David K. Wilson, the HBCU’s president, said the Morgan State community “can take solace today in knowing that an arrest has been made.”
Wilson added, “We look forward to the day when all the individuals involved in the shooting are made to be held accountable for what took place.”
The Five Morgan State University Victims Are Believed To Have Been “Unintended Targets”
This development follows the Oct. 3 mass shooting at Morgan State, which resulted in at least five people sustaining non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
According to NBC News, authorities say four of the victims have been discharged from the hospital. The victims — one man and four women — range between 18 and 22 years old.
Notably, Worley reportedly said the injured parties are believed to have been “unintended targets.” He also chalked the incident up to “probably [being] a dispute between two smaller groups.”
There are no further updates at this time.
