What Brand Of Eggs Are Being Recalled & Why?

On Friday, September 6, the FDA published a notice about the egg recall via its official website. Additionally, the notice explained that Milo’s Poultry Farms, LLC. — a manufacturer in Bonduel, Wisconsin — has issued a recall on egg products under the “Milo’s Poultry Farms” brand and the “Tony’s Fresh Market” brand.

“…these eggs have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” the FDA’s notice reads.

According to the administration, those infected with Salmonella may “often experience fever, diarrhea…  nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.” Furthermore, salmonella infection can reportedly spread to one’s bloodstream and lead to “more severe illnesses such as arterial infections… endocarditis and arthritis.”

“The recall was initiated after the FDA informed the company that environmental samples tested positive for the bacteria. FDA also conducted whole genome sequencing and found that the samples were related to an ongoing Salmonella outbreak investigation,” the notice adds.

Which States Are Being Impacted & What Should Consumers Do?

Per the FDA, the recall is reportedly affecting “all carton sizes and all egg types” labeled with “Milo’s Poultry Farms” and “Tony’s Fresh Market,” regardless of the expiration date. The cartons were reportedly sold in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois.

However, a September 6 alert posted by the CDC indicates that 24 people have been hospitalized while at least 65 people have fallen ill across California, Utah, Colorado, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Virginia. At this time, no deaths have been reported.

Furthermore, the FDA has asserted that production of both brands of eggs has ceased, and consumers are “urged not to consume” either brand of eggs if they are in their possession.

The FDA Issued A Recall On Ice Cream Earlier This Year

In June, the FDA issued a similar recall on various ice cream brands. As The Shade Room previously reported, at the time, it was determined that multiple brands manufactured by Totally Cool Inc. in Maryland were “potentially” contaminated with listeria.

Similarly to Salmonella, listeria is noted to cause severe symptoms in children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

Furthermore, the recall impacted over 13 ice cream brands, including household names such as Jeni’s and Hershey’s.
